About us

The history and the mission

The structured development of mathematics in Albania traces its roots back to the second half of the 20th century. With the founding of the University of Tirana in 1957 and the establishment of the Department of Mathematics within the Faculty of Natural Sciences (FSHN), the first generation of native mathematicians and researchers was formed. For decades, the mathematical community operated through university and academic structures, managing national competitions and preparing student delegations for global events, especially following Albania's debut at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1993. The Albanian Mathematical Association (AMA / SHSHM) was consolidated as the principal non-profit professional body uniting professors, researchers, and educators across the country. Partnering with regional and international bodies (such as the Mathematical Society of South-Eastern Europe (MASSEE) and the European Mathematical Society (EMS)), AMA serves as the primary bridge connecting Albanian mathematics with the international scientific community. The mission of the Albanian Mathematical Association is: Elevating Mathematical Education: To advance the quality of teaching, learning, and curriculum standards across both pre-university and higher education levels. Nurturing Talent: To organize and support national Olympiads, intensive training camps, and the selection of national teams representing Albania at prestigious events such as the IMO, BMO, and EGMO. Advancing Academic Research: To foster mathematical research, facilitate knowledge exchange, and build collaborative opportunities for local scholars with international academic institutions. Popularizing Mathematics: To encourage analytical thinking and mathematical literacy among youth through inclusive competitions (such as "Math Kangaroo") and educational publications.
